Rediscovering the world of ancient music
As the first monastery to be built in the former province of Saintonge, the Abbaye aux Dames was hugely influential in its time. This influence is kept alive today, thanks to the abbey’s unique architecture, as well as a rich program of musical events.
Music and history are both woven into the fabric of the site, with a resurgence of baroque music over 40 years ago leading to extensive renovation work being carried out.
The historic 10th-century Abbaye aux Dames is home to an association dedicated to developing international cultural projects.
Located in the town of Saintes, the Abbaye aux Dames is a centre for musical discovery.
The team at the abbey are responsible for organising such renowned events as the Saintes Music Festival, as well as running the highly successful Jeune Orchestre de l’Abbaye (JOA).
Set against the backdrop of a romanesque abbey and classic style conventual buildings, the Abbaye aux Dames is dedicated to the study and performance of music both in France and abroad.
