7 – The cells (XVIIe century)
On the first and second floors, leading off the large corridor with its vaulted ceiling, there are fourty-five monastic cells. This explains the impressive size of this type of building for its time. The Abbaye aux Dames housed between 60 to 80 monastic sisters.
These cells can be quite spacious, sometimes even possessing little annexes. They would have been furnished with a bed, an oratory, a table and a crucifix. The private and intimate nature of these cells created the ideal environment for individual contemplation and meditation.
They have been converted into bedrooms and can be booked for one or several nights.
