Suite n° 3 opus 87

Ophélie Gaillard, cellist

While Bach’s Suites are undoubtedly the most famous contribution to cello solos in the history of music, Britten’s work, including his three Suites, is also exceptional. His attention to the cello stems from his close friendship with Rostropovitch, who ordered many pieces for his instrument, including a cycle of twelve works by twelve different composers, the theme of which was the “name” of S-A-C-H-E-R (E, A, C, B, E, D, in each letter’s musical equivalent), as a tribute to Paul Sacher, a famous Swiss patron.
